I'm in the process of self-publishing a novel and while Lulu do a good job, I'm hoping to find a suitable alternative. Any suggestions?

There is no such thing as a good self publishing alternative. Self publishing is never free - not even Lulu. It will cost you a lot of money with very little in return.

You will get books with your name on them - that is about it. Self publishing is known for low quality books filled with errors at that.

What it will not get you is books on shelves in stores. And that is where the action is in the business. It will also not get you any kind of promotion and advertising and without that, how will anyone know you have a book for sale? The answer is simple - YOU have to spend more money to promote it. Self publishing is generally a losing proposition. The average sales are about 100 copies. Only 9 books in the history of self publishing aka vanity publishing have made it to the best seller list. One was The Celestine Prophecy.

The good alternative is traditional publishing. If you really think you have a great book, you owe it to yourself and to that book to spend one year or 18 months trying to sell it traditionally. Self publishing is for people who have been turned down repeatedly or who know their work will not stand the test of traditional publishing. If yours will - you should go for it and start reading Writers Market or Literary Marketplace and querying publishers and agents.

If you go to my profile you will find I have starred many good Q and A on the subject of writing and publishing. You can print them out and read them. I add more as I see them. Many people have me as a fan and they are saving the Q and A I mark as their own reference book. You will be able to see what many have said about publishing and self publishing. You will see most are against it and some are quite adamant about their experiences with Lulu.

There is also good information at Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler regarding publishing vs. self publishing.

Good luck to you. Pax - C

Seven years ago, the comments about self publishing were for the most part correct. But since then ... hoo wee ... self publishing has become quite a good way to go. It's true that there are a lot of less than well done books out there but there is story after story of folks who have published on Kindle and then through print on demand when they got more exposure. It is true that the writer must produce excellent work and then work hard at promoting their book. But it's almost 2015 and that which was written about self publishing in 2007 is largely no longer the case. The big publishers are against the ropes.

Try AUTHOR ASSIST COM or Writer's Digest or Writerscafe orig. com. Otherwise, simply click the net for any fiction topic and you will meet along the way but I forgot the site on self-publishing.
