Depends what you mean by retaliate.
If I caught them in the act, then I would retaliate with my foot up their ***.....or a shovel upside their head, whichever happens to be more useful.
If I only learned of the incident after it happened, then if the damage is serious enough, I'd call the cops. Ofcourse this one is only for property.
If I learned after the fact that they attacked my family, I'd call the cops and press charges. And if that didn't work, well, revenge is best served cold and right away. Though, I'd only retaliate to the level that they hurt my family. Broke an arm on purpose? I'd break theirs.....

I will not let ANYONE hurt me or mine if I can. I have a carry and conceal weapons permit. And I do carry a handgun. It would be very,very, bad for the person who intends to harm us. This is not bravado, I mean it. I hope I never have to use any of my weapons but I will use them if I have too. I'm not interested in retaliation or revenge. Obviously, it's not worth going to jail to "get" them after the fact. That's the police's job.

I'm not going to go after them at some later date if the conflict is already over,that's for law enforcement. But if I were attacked I would definitely fight back at the time of the attack, if that's what you mean.

If someone attacked me, I would defend myself. If someone attacked my family, or property, I would defend them. If I saw someone attacking a random person on the street, I would defend them too.

It is against the law to retaliate - - - you should leave these in the hands of the authorities lest you find yourself in deeper trouble.

Depends on the situation.
If it was in person and I was witnessing it, yes.
If it has been in the past I'd report it to the police. if the Police weren't helping I'd take it to the local newspaper/TV news.
