Much of the meaning of sunflowers stems from its namesake, the sun itself. Wild sunflowers are often photographed with their tall stalks and bright petals stretched towards the sun. This unique behavior, known as phototropism, is a motif that has appeared in many ancient myths and is viewed as a symbol of loyalty and constancy. Their physical resemblance to the sun has also influenced their meanings. The sunflower’s petals have been likened to bright yellow rays of sunshine, which evoke feelings of warmth and happiness. In addition, the sunflower is often associated with adoration and longevity.

For a flower which reflects so many of the sun's positive characteristics, it is little surprise that people enjoy basking in the sunflower’s warming glow. With the sense of brightness and warmth that sunflowers naturally impart, they have become an ideal choice for sending sentiments of cheerfulness and sunny thoughts.

Maybe you could use some of these facts about sunflowers to illustrate the idea of how what seems like such a simple "common" lowly flower can really be complex, stately & beautiful... and a symbol of unity.
Sunflower heads consist of 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers joined together by a receptacle base. The large petals around the edge of a sunflower head are individual ray flowers which do not develop into seed.
There are 50 species and 19 subspecies of sunflowers found in the United States.

Sunflowers has brought hope to & has helped take care of an environment that had previously brought sorry for many... not just by its beauty, but by its utility:
Floating rafts of sunflowers are being used to clean up water contaminated as a result of the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the former Soviet Union. The roots of the sunflower plants remove 95% of the radioactivity in the water by pulling contaminants out of the water.

Can't anyone do their own homework anymore?

What a sunflower means is relative to the definition YOU give it yourself. For example, if I think a sunflower is a happy thing, then I will write about it in a happy way. But if I want to make it negative, then I will write about it in a negative and darker way.

Since it's a love story, common sense would say it is a happy thing. Also if this helps...sunflowers always face...um...the sun.

A sunflower is a large, yellow flower with a dark center. They can grow to be very large, with centers as much as twelve inches in diameter for the types of sunflowers grown for their seeds. They can also be very tall; I've seen fields of them in Kansas and Colorado that are ten to twelve feet tall. They are grown for their seeds which can be consumed after toasting, or pressed for sunflower oil. Many birds like to eat sunflower seeds, and people who enjoy feeding birds often put out sunflower seeds to attract them.

Why does a sunflower have to have a meaning? It's beautiful, that's all it has to be. It's like love. It's beautiful. That's all it has to be. Why do you have to have a meaning to write a love poem?

I used to work at a floral shop for years and we had a list of flowers and their meanings. The sunflower meant "I adore you". I always suggested to women or girls who wanted to get their boyfriends/husbands flowers. One of the more masculine flowers.
