I have seen mention of them but no explanation.
Why do some people hate them? Aren't trolls sentient beings too? Aren't they worthy of respect?

Internet troll or just Troll, is someone who just intentionally posts posts to create controversies so people will be baited to respond. (flamebait)
Often trolls use many aliases , screen names or even accounts so they can agree/disagree with them self.
They are highly annoying and can derail a post just by 'trolling'. Hence the hate by many people.
Troll is also used as a direct insult to a poster.
If you encounter a troll , the best way to discourage them is to simply ignore what they posted because reacting to their post will encourage them to post more disruptive posts.
Hence the term 'please do not feed the troll'

A troll is a nasty, short little creature with oddly coloured hair.
No, they are not deserving of respect. Respect should only be dealt where respect is given. Every troll I have dealt with (and that is quite an astounding number, mind you) has kicked me in the shins and called me filthy names which cannot be mentioned here.
They do, however, make quite a tasty soup.

An Internet Troll is someone who lurks around message boards waiting for an opportunity to post something abrasive, offensive, or vile-- just for the pleasure of causing trouble.
They enjoy the reaction they get from regular users.

Y!A trolls; Give rude and vulgar answers, sometimes they have vulgar avatars, report decent people for no good reason and some will track and report people until their accounts are deleted. No respect here.

trolls like all mythical being are thought differently depending on the culture in some they are short in some they are tall but in all they can only be killed by fire
