It is called a lunar eclipse. The moon is passing through the shadow of the earth. In my area (USA), it will take about an hour for the shadow to cover the entire moon, another hour and a half of darkness, and then a hour for the shadow to move off. (It should be nearing the end of the darkness in my time zone as I type.)
It is a sign that the end of the world is about to happen, and the aliens will be landing at any moment....

It's a total Lunar Eclipse!
It means that the moon is totally eclipsed by another body, and this time, it's Mars. The earth, the moon and Mars are aligned perfectly at this time
