I think history has proved that brilliant persons, high IQ'd and creative have a height percentage of persons within that group that were mentally ill, addicts, etc.....
I myself am an artist, and have been for quite a while. I suffer from depression due to post traumatic stress and it's been a real bear but I did a lot of reading and research and did find that it is believed that an artist who has gone through bad times, mental illness, depression and so on and so on have been shown to be more creative. I often think to myself, I say "Myself, what would my work look like today without the influences, trials and tribulations and the pure fact that for a man of 40 I have seen things that people should just not have to see, ever!
I think all of that meant yes:)

I must respectfully choose to disagree completely with that inane answer. With no disrespect intended I feel that maybe you have not lived enough to see the parrallells between creativity and insanity and to call it a MYTH, my God man come one. Let me just mention a couple names and then I will go.
Hmmmmmmmmmm........
Ernest Hemingway = genius, creative to an obsessive fault, completely an alchoholic and womanizer, was dressed as a female by his mother for at least the first ten years of life and what a happy little myth it be, the swallowing of a shotgun barrell. Howard Hughs? Jackson Pollack? Should I go on and on and on and on. I can say with no reservations at all that behind every artist and every comedian lies chaos and a tormented soul.

Take responsibility for your own actions, if you do no one will be able to put a label on you if you don't let them. You obviously are worried and insecure right now because you think you are special, but guess what?? You are not special there are literally millions of genius, borderline insane out here. But those are man made words to describe the actions that they do not understand. Try hanging out with people that like you for you and not for a competitive activity nor should you be a Lab Rat, Remember Doctors only practice because they do not know. There is no such thing as genius, there is only out of control behavior, so control your behavior and you got it made in the shade bubba.

Insanity is a complicated thing.
Genius can manipulate it and turn it into an unfathomable infliction that a normal person cannot.
The real depths of insanity does border genius.

I doubt if Insanity can ever border on Genius, though the other way round, could be possible.
I've come across a genius who borders on Insanity, but on second thoughts what may seem insane to me, a non-genius could be perfectly sane for a genius.
Isn't that one of the reasons that he/she is a genius, while I'm not. ;-)

Oh my! If that's the case than you're freakin' Einstein! I guess that must mean that I'm pretty smart too! Nah!
Studies show that geniuses suffer from some kind of mental disorder. Take Beethoven, Mozart and Einstein they all suffered Asperger's Syndrome. There's a possibility that the same genes that cause Asperger's are a source of creative brilliance.
Take a look at all the really smart kids you grew up with, they may have been extremely intelligent, but they probably lacked in social skills. They were always a little different and awkward.
Isn't human behavior fascinating?

I would say that one breeds the other, not just borders on it. It's been proven that alot of people who are bi-polar also have extremely high IQs, or are artistic geniuses of some sort. And we can probably all remember that one kid in school who was super smart, but not really well adjusted. He (or she) was really awkward and a bit strange. At the very least, genius doesn't allow a person to be "normal", right?

In some cases, it may. Perhaps the others call a genius insane - in the sense of different from them.

Go visit a mental institution. See how much creativity is there.
Go talk to the 68 year old man who screams at his own relection, or chat with a 26 year old girl who does nothing but cry because she believes she has an unborn fetus rotting in her womb and can't get it out.
Ask these folk to write a nice sonnet or paint a picture for you.
It's a myth.

reverse it. Genius borders insanity as genius is immense where insanity is limited.
