I'm just asking... because if I decided to throw our company's most talented person under the bus while coddling someone who was using a substance to gain an unfair advantage, that would get me fired from my job easily.

Jeter is considered a great leader because the fawning baseball press/announcers decided he was a great leader. he probably was while they were winning the WS, although winning the WS helps.
But he has thrown Rodriguez under the bus (while sticking up for steroid cheat Giambi).
And anyone who thinks that Rodriguez "sucks in the playoffs" should spend a little time looking at his stats there. Yes, his most recent series have been bad. But he is overall 280/362/485. In the 2000 ALCS he was 409/480/773, and in the 2004 ALDS he was 421/476/737.
If that's bad, I will take a team of it!

Every year the Yankees keep a small core of good players and waste big money on high profile free agents, then trade away prospects for middle-aged journeymen. A great leader would bring this group of misfits together to produce as a team. What have the Yankees done in recent years? That's right, nothing. Guess that answers the question.
Jeter has put up great numbers for the Yankees. But he's not even the best player on the team. His Gold Gloves are a joke. He's a slap-hitting #2 batter who happens to play in the media capitol of the world. NY would be better off spending Jeter's 19 million per year on pitching.

It's not the media that's declaring him the leader. George Steinbrenner the most prolific owner in the history of the sport donned him captain. The Yankees don't always have a captain. It's not like he had to name SOMEBODY captain and Jeter just happened to be available, he earned it. All of his teammates respect Jeter and follow his leadership. If you don't agree with it that's your problem. But when you play the game right you get everyone's respect. If you think this is all just my opinion look at some of the things said from the players on team USA during the World Baseball Classic. Name one shortstop that's more respected throughout the Majors.

I have to believe that the reality of it is, is that there is no such thing as a "team leader" or "great leader". As much as baseball is a team sport, it's also as much as a one on one sport as there is. Leading by example is about as close as anyone can get to being a leader. The New York media has to have a hero and Jeter got picked. Fortunately for him, he's a great player. Jeter's the captain of the greatest sport franchise in the world. Pressure? Yea, I'd say so. And so what if he expresses himself. Who's to say he can't? Winning championships is the only cure. It seems to make asshole buddies with everyone concerned. Fact of life!!

Pretty much everything about Jeter is overrated, to include his so-called "leadership". A leader doesn't throw his best troop under the bus like he did with Pay-Rod.

Jeter isn't even the best player in his own position (SS, Pay-Rod is better), much less the best on his own team.

Yes I agree with your point, with The Derek choosing who on your team to support while bringing down the best player on the team... not exactly the person you'd want to follow. It actually sounds like he's self promoting by demoting his biggest rival for attention.

He does have a very notable accomplishment as Yankee captain:

First captain to lead team from 3-0 to series defeat in seven games, 2004 ALCS

I can't top Bucky's answer, so I'll just second what he said.

I really have nothing against Jeter - a future first-ballot HOFer - but the whole "leader" thing is ridiculous. In his defense, it's really the fault of the media for hoisting it on him, and he never asked for that extra acclaim.
