did you not get planning permission? surely youd need it to build one.

Check the planning regs for your area on the local government website for your area. Or just phone and ask them to post you the right booklet for "permitted development", or pick it up from their offices. In my area, you are allowed a 3 square metre porch (external measurement) without planning permission; if it's bigger than that, permission must be obtained, and would probably be refused. That's here. But councils differ.

If you think you got it wrong (and the guidelines you mention suggest you did), and if your neighbour definitely complains, talk to the planning department nicely about it when they get involved, because they can exercise certain discretion. But otherwise sit tight and say nowt for the time being. If there is no complaint within 4 years, you're OK anyway. Unfortunately, the fact that other people have the same porch as you is irrelevant. Councils tighten up from time-to-time on what they permit. I fell into the trap of thinking I would be able to have an extension like a few neighbours have, but they are no longer permitting them - on the grounds of "visual amenity".

You said you've looked at the Hounslow council website and they "don't like" people going beyone the bay window line. Is it FORBIDDEN?

If you built your porch like all the others in your area, then it must not be. I think you have a grumpy neighbor who just wants to control what you do. Have a talk with him and tell him to mind his bleeping business or you'll sue him for harrassment.

If you like your porch, don't change it until your are forced to.....which I doubt will ever happen.

Did you get planning permission??? if not keep quiet until your nosey neighbour manages to get the council to send someone out and all they will normally do is tell you off and ask you to reduce it to the size of the bay window unless of course you get a jobs worth or give them to much agro then they may get you to take it all down.

but 9 times out of 10 the neighbours complain but never do anything about it.

you may have to pull it down ..i expect you have built in front of the building line ...this is the part of a property that projects the furthest ..if you are in front of this then you could be prosecuted for it ..you should have found out about this before you started

Hi, talking from experience, ignore everyone until the council kicks off and consider getting a pitbull, as that will help deter the authorities, as well as the attention from next door. mike
