Practice, practice, practice and practice even more :) It's the only way to become better. You can try to reproduce stuff, try the imaginative way as well. The more you do the better you'll get. I've been drawing all my life so i know. There are also classes, books... The guy that wrote you that you have to write the story too don't know anything 'cause very often on children's books you see STORY BY: M. Something & ILLUSTRATIONS BY: Mrs. Drawing. Never abandon your dream. You go girl!

Well, to improve illustration skills you need to be able to tell what's happening in a picture . So it would be helpful to know how to draw people doing things, especially that are hard to draw, like running or whatever. To become an illustrator, I think you have to take up Fine Arts in college, which takes four years. After you get out of college you would have to get a contract with a book publisher so that you could do artwork in their books.

As far as pursuing that career you'll just need to practice alot and keep drawing and keep drawing and keep drawing until you're sick of drawing and then draw some more! Sketch everything, take a little sketchbook everywhere you go and draw everything you see because we as humans and artist learn from observation and of course practice. Drawing what youo see in real life will help you to draw things from your imagination because you already have a sense of what it looks like translated into a 2 dimensional form.

How to take life drawing? find a college near you and see if you can enroll in that class or think about pursuing an art studio degree because you will learn alot by doing that!! And it helps to study more than just what you want to do, like 3-d design, photography, ceramics, etc.

Good Luck!!

If you want to learn how to draw realistic pencil portraits I strongly recommend this site http://pencilportraits.toptips.org

I have bought their course because I wanted to be able to draw realistic portraits and I felt that I did not have the skills to produce a beautiful realistic portrait.
This course has been a great help, although I still need loads of practice I feel that I have learned so much through following this course in techniques and observation. The lessons are so easy to follow especially with the aid of the process maps which show which steps to tackle next.
Hope it helps.

well, if you old enough...taking some life drawing classes at a college or community college would increase your drawing abilities dramastically!

also, keep a sketchbook and draw in it at least once a day, rather it be something cartoonish..or just sit down outside and draw a tree.

some excercises you can try are doing blind countour drawings and quick gesture drawings.

Many children book illustrators write their own books. Start writing as well, and take a class near you that teaches painting, which is pretty important in the profession. Once you think you are good enough try to get your book published.
