No.

Here is a saying I use to use often:

" I sometimes B.S. others, but occasionally I like to listen to a real pro, Please carry on."

The "sanctity" of the nominee is not the issue here. Alberto Gonzales (along with Donald Rumsfeld, Harriet Miers, and Michael Brown) are probably all good and decent people. The issue is competence on the job. Alberto Gonzales in particular was in way over his head. It didn't help that he managed to turn his role as AG into that of a political flunkie.

As for the reaction of the left to the next nominee, you are probably correct: the left will likely auto-react as if Bush's next appointment is of the same quality as his previous ones.

I believe you. The President has the option of appointing an interim AG, and the appointment will be good for 210 days. It can be renewed. It would be better than waiting months for another Kangaroo Court in the Senate's confirmation process.

No, they haven't. Dubya will have to look long and hard to find someone as criminally incompetent as Gonzalez. However I have no doubt Dubya will try.
