After i've gone through the nappies i've bought, I plan to move to cloth (apart from nighttime...unless its recommended otherwise?) . What have you guys found to be the best nappies for value (price)? And have you got any tips for me?

I used just the plain white square, fold yourself, kind of cloth nappies. With the plastic or cloth pants over the top. These worked really well during the day (and night for the first 2-3mths) and they are easy to sanitise and bleach and wash. They only cost me about $25 for a pack of 20 or so and a 3pack of plastic pilchers (pants) cost about $5 and I got 3x3packs. The plastic pants come in different sizes so you can upgrade as needed. Then all you need is 2 nappy buckets for soaking and the nappy liners for them which you can also wash (I threw out the poo'ed ones and washed and re-used the wee'd on ones.) Sounds like a lot, but isn't really!

$25 for cloth nappies
$15 for plastic pilchers
$10 for 2 buckets with lids
$7 for a box of 100 washable nappy liners
$3 for 2x snappies (the new style pins to go them up with)

All in all, for $60 it's much cheaper than disposables and you can re-use them for all your children.

Hope that helps!
Oh, and any good child health centre or midwife should be able to show you how to fold them correctly for boys/girls, newborn/older child.

I live in New Zealand but I use a nappy that I think is available everywhere - it's called Real Nappies by Bummis. Fantastic! It uses prefolds and wraps and I would never use disposables. Even at night I just pop in a booster pad and that works really well. When I go out I take a ziplock plastic bag and put the soiled nappy in that and deal with that when I get home. Why spend money on disposables when you don't have to? And of course the environmental benefits are HUGE. Good on you for going cloth!

Im still using cloth nappies and my boys are nearly 2. I got a pack of 12 for about $20-$25. Get towel though not cloth!!

You will need about 36 for each child, plus nappy liner. I found the best nappy liners are white and usually the cheaped brand. They didnt break up in washing!!

I used these nappies in a kite fold and of a night i lay and extra one in the nappy itself. Its really bulky but the kiddies are asleep so it doesnt matter!
As well as that if your child sleeps all night put some corn flour in their nappy so they dont get a rash.

My biggest tip, stick with it because my girlfriends spent up to $60-$80 a fourtnight. I spend about $4-5 a month .
AND i wash mine in a washing machine. Rince them first, chuck them in a bucket of water for about 6 hours then chuck them in the washing maching to wash!!!

I hope i helped

I've never heard of it not being recommended for night time... most of my friends who use cloth - use them all the time... occassionally using disposables if they're going on a trip or on an all day outing.

I don't have lots of experience, but I do think that the one-size adjustable ones seem to be the best value. I'm babysitting a boy who's got a pretty good collection of Fuzzy Bunz in different sizes - and a handful of the BumGenius adjustable ones.... I am going to do cloth w/ my next child, and I've already decided to start saving up for a bunch of those... they work awesome!! I don't think they're cheap... but in the long run still worth the money. I don't like the idea of buying them in sizes, you'll invest the money for just a couple of months worth of use then they outgrow them :)

There are places to get them used... or defective 2nds... the 2nds are usually just something like off seaming, or the pattern didn't line up right at the seams, or a crooked velcro strip. Some people think it's gross to get them used... but I think if you know where they came from, and wash them a couple of times before using them, it's no different than if you've just reused them from your own first to second child!!

Good Luck... I think it's totally worth it!!
