would it be an idea to make house here out of wood instead of bricks like they do in america? Quicker to put up and alot cheaper to buy. With house prices going through the roof and demand on more houses being built going up at a huge rate , something needs to be done about it and soon. It would also help first time buyers get on thehouseing ladder. Well i think its an option that needs to be looked at. What do you think.

The wooden houses are a great idea but i dont know if you have seen new houses go up lately, they are normally cheaply done and as quick as possible, im sure they would do the same to wooden houses so you wouldnt get the qualitly that america enjoys lol

secondly it would help if the goverment didnt just let every tom, dick and harry come live in this country and take up houses and flats needed by people who have been born in this country.

Another cheaper alternative as the government is hell bent on not increasing the amount of council houses built, is to use some of the land available instead of giving it to greedy developers and put several mobile homes on them, some are very nice and like bungalows, they could offer these to people on lower incomes at competitive low rent, like council houses but cheaper again and people could stay in them until they had enough money to purchase their own property or stay in them indefinitely, if needed, too many of these so called affordable homes being built, aren't you still have to be on decent wages to afford them and often or not they are not well built, rushed and very small, mobile homes are not joined together and are often very roomy, I have an older relation who lives in one and its no different to being in a flat or elevated bungalow, wooden homes are a good idea but the log cabins near where I live are still expensive for what the are and you are only permitted to live in them 11 months of the year, trouble is with wood, you only need one crazy bugger with a match and your home will be on fire, in America it is compulsory as they have so much wood and of course they are easier to replace if ruined by natural disasters such as Earthquakes etc.

There are several ways of easing the housing problems in the UK.Compulsory purchase of derelict and empty buildings and job experience to renovate them to the unemployed while teaching them a trade and getting them off the streets.Park home sites for first time buyers and your idea of insulated alternative type built homes.Anyone in a 3 bed council home when the children have grown up and left home should be moved to smaller quieter neighbourhoods (better for them and families).Any ex council houses that come up for sale should go back to the council for their housing stock again.Last but by no means least, immigrants with no means of support should be repatriated back to their country of origine releasing more for those in Uk by right not by design!

I agree with you..something needs to be done. And fast, trouble is there are so many people in this country already on the property ladder and earning so much...it makes it so much harder for those of us not earning as much.

i looked into buying a wooden house and building it myself..but costs to get water, electric and planning permission made it just as expensive as a house. Plus local councils often dont allow you to live in them as houses..you are only allowed to live in them a few moths a year because they are holiday homes..which is stupid if you ask me...just lining their own pockets.

There are too many people making too much money out of the property market....if we were less greedy there wouldn't be a problem.

You're absolutely right! The prices are ridiculous, and for people like myself (i'm 21 still living at home!) its way too expensive to get on the property ladder. Most people just look at the price of the house and think thats it, but you've got to bear in mind, you have to pay double that with the interest rate (which keeps going up) and all the extra fees. Well i'm afraid my parents are just gonna have to accept the fact i might be living with them for a while!!!

trust me, it will only be cheaper when it starts out, it's so hard for working class people to buy property, the people who benefit are people ON benefits because they have nowhere to go, etc. The gap between poor/rich is only gonna get bigger *sighs*, good idea though :) and maybe in the long-run if enough of these houses are built, prices for houses may reduce... but you have to think about inflation as well, like if money and property are inflating at the same rate, etc.

You don't have wooden houses? Why ever not? I have lived in both brick and wood, there is no great difference. I live in Chicago, with forced air heat (maybe you don't call it that, it's the vented system) we were fine through below zero weather. We have beautiful wooden houses here that are hundreds of years old.

nope, they should never have encouraged the 'buy your council house scheme' in the 80's.

Now we have families of 5 living in 2 bed flats, while we have old married couples rattling round in big 3-bed ex-council houses with no family near by to make use of them!!

i fully agree
log huts self build , instead of letting big developments have the land they should let council build housing for the rest of the people who need affordable homes with a shared ownership to help people get on the housing ladder
