Originally the site was called the Sow and Piglets.

The name was changed in the 1950s to the more majestic "The Twelve Apostles" to lure more visitors even though there were only nine left.

A number have fallen over entirely as waves continually erode their bases. A 50-metre tall Apostle collapsed on July 3, 2005, leaving eight.

The recurring 12 thing in religions is based upon the 12 constellations of the zodiac. The ancient people studied the sun, planets, and stars, and also plants (shamanism.) Those were the two primairy aspects in the origins of all the ancient religions, including Christianity. I'm not a Christian and I don't really buy into the evolution concept too much myself. Francis Crick who discovered the double helix shape of DNA (who is an atheist also) believes that man evolving from a mass of proteins is about as likely as a functional jumbo jet getting magically assembled in a junkyard during a hurricane. He believed we were sent here from another universe in the form of DNA to carry on a doomed advanced civilization. Knowledge of which is encoded in our own DNA if you know how to access it. We are the aliens.
