In the light of the recent surge in fatal gun crime, is it time the law was changed to allow us - in the interests of self-defence - to carry firearms?

Switzerland has the highest gun ownership in the world, because it's compulsory, and the lowest incidence of death from shooting.
It's the people that kill, not the weapon.

I don't live in the U.K. but I know that their gun laws are extremely restrictive compared to the U.S. I am more than confident enough to tell you that it is absolutely not legal to carry a gun around in public in the U.K. In the US, gun laws vary by state. Generally, you can own guns inside your home but you need a permit to carry a concealed weapon with you outside your home. Open carry (carrying a gun that is not concealed) is completely prohibited in some states, whereas in others you can get an open carry permit. It should also be noted that there are various areas where you cannot carry a gun even if you do have a permit such as schools, government buildings, etc. Also, any private business can post signs that say you are not allowed to bring guns onto their property. It is their right to do so, and even if you have a permit you can and will be arrested for carrying a gun onto property where guns are prohibited.

No offense to you, k. rowley, as you seem to have begun to use the gray matter between your ears, but as you can see by both the responses and the "thumbs down" replies that others have gotten---there is a reason why God put your people on an island!

They haven't the stomachs or the brains to defend themselves, and even if the UK government were to allow its subjects to carry guns, most of the English would surrender it as fast as a Frenchman to the nearest French schoolgirl with hairy armpits. (I'm sorry, it was a cheap shot to compare the English to the French, but I trust you understand my feelings on your effete neighbors and countrymen)

I suggest you emigrate to the USA immediately, and once here, move to a state other than Illinois, New York, New Jersey or Massachussetts. You'll discover that owning a gun isn't as horrible as you imagine it might be, and that gunfights don't erupt over traffic accidents, nor does blood run in the streets.

You'll be angry at having been lied to by the likes of Boy Wonder and Kirsty Bell and Scaredy Cat. You'll realize what freedom feels like, and wish you had more. You might even buy a gun, just because you can!

NO It should not!

The more guns there are, the more gun crime there will be....
......think of road rage incidents, arguments over parking spaces, arguments between neighbours, someone jumping a queue in the supermarket - in fact, any situation where there may be raised tempers...........

These are situations where someone carrying a gun for so-called self defence, might think, "hold on, I've had enough of this, I've got a gun - I'll just shoot this person" They may not even be threatened, just p**'d off at the other person.

If more adults have guns, then that gives children freer access to guns.... think of all the killings at schools in the US that have been carried out by children ...... do you want that here?

Making guns and knives available to more people is not the answer to gun and knife crime............

NO! NO! NO!

Absolutely!!!!!! Gun ownership is a natural right, not a privilege that can be passed out like free cheese.

In the United States the areas with high crime rates are the ones that ban guns. I have homes in Texas and Oklahoma, regions where it is legal to carry concealed firearms. The crime rate is low. The crime rate always lowers when concealed carry laws are passed.

Read "More Guns Less Crime" by John Lott to get hard stats to bolster this argument.

I dont think adding fuel to the flames is going to help. It certainly wouldnt have help the 11 year old lad...unless you're suggesting kids carry guns...

Its teenagers that are carrying out most of these atrosities...I certainly would not leave the house knowing that teenagers were legally carrying guns!

Has it helped in the USA? I think you know the answer.. this movie really (althoug I know somewhat biased) opened my eyes to the magnitude of the problem state side..Where getting a gun is as easy as opening a bank account...http://www.bowlingforcolumbine.com/ in the states, gun crimes often go unreported, its not news any more...its lost its shock value... its so common....

Let's assume that this happened and that you shot someone breaking into your home. Who would do the most jail time under the present law?

I wonder if you also think that capital punishment should be returned to the UK?

Are you ready to hang for defending your home and family while your burglar gets out of nick after three months and then sues your estate for damages leaving your family homeless?

Not a good idea chap.

I am card carrying member of the NRA and I believe in being able to protect yourself.

Members of a society that can defend themselves are citizens, members of a society that cannot are subjects.
