Depends upon who's listening, writing and speaking:
For more important questions answered a written response is more thoughtful and editable than speaking. Like this. But it can give advantage if one is listening to the speaker who can't revise his thoughts.

Both...
They equally show the intent of the person.
Though through the spoken word ,in tone of voice and body language I believe the meaning of can better show, by the underlying meta message .
however, Without written word.. Great writings of anciently spoken words would be lost , as in the Bible and other such writings.
the greatest that reveals is not by spoken or written word.. but, by action...

The written word reveals so much more in my opinion. How can you compare tellng someone what you really think to their face to the sometimes 'coward' thing of sending an SMS or e mail.
We hear too often of people dumping or dumping on others via the electronic media If they had to say it to someones face or sit down and 'golly gosh' write a real letter, they would take the time to really think about what their saying and the reaction they might get.
The written word can be so much more cutting and if deliverd, other than via SMS or e mail, more effective.

The written word...
It's easier to put your foot in your mouth, than the computer keyboard in your mouth...
(coming from a guy that has tasted his own foot many times with impulsive verbal communciation...writing enables you to visually "see" the error of you thought process than spoken words...
However...
Spoken words have more power to heal or hurt...and resonate in a person's mind longer...
Words are power...use them for good not bad...(calling a girl in school with low self-esteem a "hurtful" thing when she's very young, can stay with her the rest of her life...
I always hated my fellow bully students who verbally assaulted other students with self-esteem destroying comments...I never did that...
I was the popular guy, and I protected the weak and nerdy...I didn't add to their obvious misery...and sometimes I'd get in a fight I knew I'd lose, so the bully's victim wouldn't have to get beat up, because I've never been afraid of losing a fight, and never felt any shame in taking those bullies on, even when they were bigger than me...I enjoyed the look on those bullies face when they got injured by a guy like me who they perceived as any easy mark...man! did they learn a quick lesson about messing with me...cause even when I lost a fight...they came to school the next day with a face that wasn't pretty...
Words can help, or hurt...why would anybody would ever choose to say hurtful ones, is beyond my comprehension...

spoken, it requires one to think, they gotta watch out. if you write somthing, you have a longer reaction time. they have to read what you wrote, which takes longer than it does to process somebody's spoken words
