I especially like classical music, I'm not overly fond of opera, but there are pieces and operas I like. I like the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco, and Nessum Dorma from Turandot. I love The Ode to Joy in Beethoven's Ninth. I like the intricacy of J. S.Bach's works, and the exuberance of Mozart's, especially the masses (I grew up in choirs singing masses of Verdi, Brahms, Mozart, as well as music of Vivaldi, Handel, Frank, Shubert, Mendelsohn ,and Haydn as well as Plainsong settings) I absolutely love anything I can sing along to. I'm into Jazz since my mom was a night club singer. I'm familiar with Chicago, New Orleans, and Kansas City styles as well as some of the germinal work that came out of Kankakee. I dance to Bouzouki and Kletzmer, as well as Ball room tunes and Viennese waltzes, my Polka style is Prussian. I like Japanese Taiko drumming as well as Olatunje, and the songs of Mirriame Mkeba and Russian music out of the monastery at Valaam. I'm very eclectic, to put it mildly.
[Wow! Gamalan, Flamenco guitars (I like Montoya, did you know Chet Atkins also played classical guitar as well as country?) Hawaian slack key is great music. I could go on all day and night, a veritable feast. Native American flute music is haunting. Please put Patsy Kline in there with Hank and by all means include the Guthries]
[I have to say I just love the sheer joy of music. I've cried to Gypsy violins and Yiddish lullabies. Chanted the Shema Yisroel in both Ashkenazic and Sephardic melodies, and the L'llah Allah taught by one of the Agga Khan's mullahs. Sung the Greek troparions in Orthodox liturgies. Danced in the footsteps of my ancestors,my moccasins worn in both the fancy dances of the young and the staid, proud dances of the old, done Irish jigs and Scottish reels, and step danced to fiddle players on a dirt floor cabin in Quebec, jitterbugged the night away, twisted and soul danced in a manner that got me thrown off the dance floor (I went out with some good looking girls, and could twist so low my head nearly touched the floor while still moving my hips and feet, if you get the picture.). I've done the Eagle dance of both the Plains Indians and the Greek highlands, as well as the Eagle Rock ("Throw your lovin' arms way out in space...Do the eagle rock with such style and grace!...Push your Baby out , and then you hug her back, That's what I call, 'Ballin' the Jack'!".) Joined in Japanese festival dances at the lunar New Year. Music is universal, one of God's best gifts.]
[I'm surprised Psychic Cat and his sister are no older than my kids! I feel absolutely ancient! Wonder If I'm in the same league with Shahbarak and Patzky?]

Classical will always, always be my favourite. To me, it evokes the most universal feelings. I've referred to classical here a few times, how I relate to some composers in their "colour" as well as I do to instruments, & hardly anyone seems to know what I'm talking about.
I also enjoy ethinc folk songs, Gregorian chants, the very, very old country western like Hank Williams...primitive drums from Africa, Spanish guitar. I suspect most people here think of me as probably an "old fellar" (at 34!) ..goodness knows why! I don't associate taste for music with age, do you? See! I knew you wouldn't!
Moon--I think of you & your mum every day. Do you feel my good energy? I'm sending it across what is not distance at all..

I love late 50's too early 80's big "Hair" groups/artist.
To place me in a category would be awfully hard to do.
I'm open minded enough to other music and culture music and dance.
The only thing that I can say is that I don't like music/rap that harms others, degrades others or is full of vulgar acts of violence.
My quote is " If you are not afraid to act out or say what one has heard or seen to there mother/father or grandparents...."
I know that we all don't live in a perfect world ... but ... I believe that music should be up-lifting to all, that it should convey a positive meaning or message that would inspire those to listen to it.
Rap? I have no problem with - as long as it is also does not harm others or degrades others. This has no place anywhere in art or music. We as people can turn our TVs & radios on and listen to all the murders, rapes and miscellaneous crimes that we want to or care for listening too.
Also. Music should be inspiring to others .. A gift that God has given those who can either sing or play an instrument for his glory.
I admit that most music does not accomplish this.. but? Love, Life and laughter are feelings that our God has given us to use and to enjoy. Not to miss use or to lead others into other ways of thinking or acting out these abusive acts of violence on others.
This has been a very interesting question and one that I look forward to see as to what others have to say.
Thanks. Old Dawg 28-Aug-07

The "genre" matters not.
I am a fool for authentic melodies and hooks, creative musical arrangements and production, singable songs that reflect our lives.
Music that reaches out from the track and makes me feel like it's great to be alive.
