True identity of a person lies in the value philosophies one identifies with, whether consciously or otherwise... nothing else in a person lasts much longer..... these value philosophies determine the thinking basis and process..... and indeed a person is essentially the same as the thoughts one carries.

There are several bases that overlap over each other:
1. Society
From such minor altercations such as the root of our primary language to things like the "generic" events that happen to us and the different variations of it and how these variations are splashed on our faces as normality and or reaction to it. (be it positive or negative)
2. Culture
While almost synonymous to society, we may also evolve into a person because of informations we link to ourselves that which we wear like an armor. The difference between this and society is that when we identify ourselves through our culture, we often don't "evolve" past it once our culture changes where when we identify ourselves through society, by virtue when it changes we lean towards that change.
3. Opportunity
See through life as NL poker. When we fold or call with a particular hand, it defines what type of player we are and what is percieved to consistently happen for us between the line of present and future.
Why I say this is separate fundamentally from society and culture is because opportunity can easily be founded from our lack of one or from our having of one therefore making both things interlinked yet not necessarily required for when we identify ourselves through our opportunities.
4. Sentients
When we mingle with each other as living creatures, we create a volatile effect that is crucial for society/culture and opportunities to manifest yet at the same time, this identity separates itself from those others in that this is the most random and the least consistent outcome of them all.
Where as society and culture can be directed and opportunity can be perceived or grasp, this has no foundation whatsoever and it's this reasoning. This search for a controlled excuse that gives us our
most personal identity.

Character, which I now have to look up, but first I'll say that I think character is the "foundation of the building" of "personal identity."
(Not to mention DNA, fingerprints, all kinds of I.D.s...read "The Traveler" by John Twelve Hawks to find all that kind of paranoia... it's a good book, in fantasy or sci-fi.)
Seriously, character, "the basis of a person's identity." and more. I think it's built mainly on experience (childhood brings in parental figures and influences re environment; young adults taste a lot of things, and older adults are still on their quests, or content with their lot... it's all cool spiritually speaking, as long as your spirit feels some freedom when necessary.)
Character.

Aren't you actually asking me what is the foundation of who I am? The answer will vary upon the person. Me, was a fairly strict up bringing, which I finally rebelled against. Then spent the next 10 - 12 years, making up for what I perceived as lost time. But as most people I returned to my roots. Heck, I guess most do.......
Have a Great Day!!

Identity is defined by personal experience and perspective. Although great minds share common interest, they also share concept expansion.( Explaining the same S*** in different ways). The Responsibility lies not only in explaining the situation, but believing it.

Do you mean right down at the very bottom of things? The difference between your identity and mine is indexical. Otherwise you are asking a psychology question.

It's what makes us choose blue, instead of green. It's what tells us not to walk down a certain road, but to go the other way. It's the thing that whispers in our ear and tells us not to do something. It's our mind, and our soul. :)

Speech (speaking to souls) is the most easier task to identify one personally.
