Make sure, when you are breathing, not to stick your whole head out of the water. You will observe that there will be an air pocket to breathe from. Make sure to keep your head in the water and roll your shoulders and hips. When doing freestyle, try and breathe every 5 strokes. When you're tired, you won't get anywhere by slapping the water. Reach out your arms and pull the water in hard. It's important that your legs are in good shape; you can improve the strength in you legs by running, jumping stairs, or bicycling. It's good to have strong ab muscles as well. Try crunches or leg throws. Always, always stretch before swimming. If you don't stretch you can get cramped up, or worse injuries. Eat healthy and avoid pop(soda) and fatty foods. Bananas, apples, and pasta can help with energy and carbs. Good Luck!!

What I do is wear 5 bathing suits when I go swimming on top of that I wear stockings. I get into shape by running a mile everyday. Just try to have as much drag as you can when you go swimming and soon you will be a very strong swimmer. Plus have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep your limbs firm and straight and don't flail or make unnecessary movements. Each movement you make creates resistance since your in the water and counters the propulsion your hands and legs have created. So try to keep your movements fluid and rythmic

Refine your stroke - depends which one you are doing of course! A strong leg kick is important and you can improve this by using floats. As to the breathing, again its down to which stroke you are using.
