The essentials are footwork, positioning, shotmaking (includes the different types of shots) and proper form. There are so many drills and exercises that'll help you develop and master these essentials. The best way to hone 'em is, of course, PRACTICE. Hiring a pro, if you can afford it, is most helpful. If you can't, there are hundreds of instructional materials out there for you to learn from.

all good advice so far, I think that the best way to practice is definitely to practice, especially with someone better than you. Practicing helps you build your skills and your strength.

Seeing as you're five feet tall, which is a little below average for a woman, you'll also want to practice jumping. I'm average height for a man and I still jump on almost every shot. Practicing your jump smashes is be especially helpful for competitive play.

Most of all, remember that even if you're playing competitively, it's still about fun. The goal isn't to beat the other person, it's to do the best you can. Don't go in thinking you're going to lose, but focus less on the competition and you'll actually do better.

Good luck!
