for sure these fires are not by accident.
on the way to the beach one day,in kefalonia, we say a tiny, little fire starting and thank God we had a bottle of water with us.
there are a lot of weird people in the world but when i think of that statement deeper i remember that its all over the place. and now since its coming to greece i feel weird, a feeling i cant explain... :'(
25/8/07
altogether there were 160 different fires. at least 2 houses are burnt to a crisp. 41 people dead including firefighters. a fire crossed a highway. It was hard for planes to take off because of the wind. The fire today travelled 60 km. it is just as much smoke as 9/11. The fire is now in Zakaros, Immitos, Peloponniso, Katehaki and Athens.
28/8/07
63 people have died and many eu countries are helping out putting out the fire, including turkey.
one thing for sure is that some people, when they turn on the news, they watch the fire for 5 minutes and then turn it off. they say that they care but the problem is that so much of crime is happening almost everyday and people dont say much about it.
my deepest sympathies to the families of all who have passed away and to the whole nation, ill and i am praying for them. just as my loved ones have gone i will pray for them the same way, making them my loved ones.

Yes, all these fires are just so horrible...I don't have any words to express my anger! But my anger is not only towards those mean arsonists, it is also about the people in charge of the forestry.
We all know that every summer many fires break out in the Mediterranean countries, be it by arsonists or natural causes. Yet, why weren't any measures taken to prevent them from becoming so big? I have seen that in France and Turkey fire ditches have been created to stop fires from spreading more. The problem is also the dry undergrowth nobody is picking it up anymore to use for making fires in the house, goats who used to feed on them have also become scarce! I sincerely hope that the Greek governement will take those preventive measures in the future!

Actually, there are many different reasons for fires to get started.
Some of them are caused by accident, which is equal to criminal negligence, as when a farmer decides to burn the weed in his acre amidst summer and while wind is blowing.
Some others are intentionally set by the "land Mafia". This is the majority of arsons round the cities (Hymitos, Pendeli, Mesogeia).
Some or rather many are caused, also intentionally, by shepherds to create new grazing grounds (confirmed by forest authorities).
But the majority of the fires caused this summer, and especially the last catastrophic ones, were intentionally caused, materializing a real plan.
Who can be behind this plot? Ofcourse we do not now, and perhaps we'll never know, but one thing is for sure:
Those recent fires exploded after the Government's having announced the exact date of elections.
This is not an innuendo. It's just a fact....

I regret to say that I think girl24gr has got it right - these fires are not started by crazy people, they are started by people who have a very clear idea of what they are trying to achieve.
I hear lots of stories from my friends and relatives still living in Greece - that it is Pasok in the run up to the elections, that it is business people trying to release more unforested land to build on, and so on.
There is no way that 87 fires (the number I heard on the news) can have started accidentally in such a short space of time.
Whatever or whoever it is the reason behind it, nothing justifies the deaths that have been caused. It makes me very sad that my homeland is on fire and even more sad that it may be my own people that are causing it.

Komizeis glauka es Athinas. we all know this is the work of arsonists. Otherwise we wouldn't find remote control fire mechanisms in the spots of the fires and they wouldn't re-start in the m iddle of the night in five different spots, would they?

Oh wow that's horrible! There are so many sick and twisted people in this planet that it's really scary.
Just today my younger brother told me that when he went up to his cottage with his grandparents, there was some kid who was fishing with his family...and when he finally caught the fish he looked at it and said "you stupid fish! I waited such a long time to catch you!" and then he started smashing the poor fish on the ground.
That was so horrible :-(

I think there is a specific psychological illness. The person can't help start fires. I don't remember the name, though.
I think the psychological illness, money-o-phili is the real reason behind the fires.
