I have read and enjoyed all of Stephen Kings writings. But one of my favorites (besides the oldies like Carrie, Salem's Lot, IT, etc.) is Gerald's Game and Bag of Bones. I would just start with the early ones and keep going through til the end! Even if you have seen the movies (most don't do the books justice with the exception of The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption) I would encourage you to get the books. They miss a great deal of detail in the movies. For example, in Cujo, SK goes into the mind of the dog and actually has points from the dogs perspective, whereas in the movie you don't really get that interaction. Also, most of the books are intertwined. When you read one, it often briefly mentions something about an incident in another book . Pretty cool, actually. Good luck and enjoy!

Desperation is a pretty scary novel

Dreamcatcher is a good novel.

The Dark Tower series is completely awesome, it incorporates a little bit of everything: horror, fantasy, magic, etc.

Salem's Lot is also a good one.

I am reading Bag of Bones and so far it is good.

As far as the Johnny Depp movie goes it was based on a short story called Secret window, Secret garden. The movie is called Secret Window.

The Dark Half is a totally different story and is a novel. I haven't read it yet but I enjoyed the movie.

I also enjoyed the movie Needful Things and plan on reading it soon.

I almost forgot to comment on It, it's a great book and movie.

Sorry I know you just wanted us to recommend one but they are all so good and I think that you should read all of his books, I am going to.

All of his first, once you start reading, and understanding past the scary idea, you will see what a wonderful writer he is, and how much humanity he brings to his novels. Like in Carrie, The poor girl with that terribly fanatic of a mother, and being the outcast in school, for not being as rich or as popular or as pretty and outgoing, I felt so bad for her.

The Shining and It. The Shining because it was a story all about a family basically trapped in a Mansion during the winter. It starts to come alive and tries to get Jack, the father, to help it. Also It because of the clown, they always scared me so much. I felt Carrie wasn't so scary as it was sad. I just pitied her.

Misery was a great book and even if you already saw the movie there are still some surprises.
I absolutely loved the Green Mile even thought it's not scary.

I gotta go with 'Salem's Lot,for my money, one of the best vampire novels ever written!Forget the tv movies(although good)read the book!I did,not realizing at first, what it would be about, but a few chapters in?Wow!The only other book that I've read in this vien that comes close is Interview W/A Vampire, but even that in it's own way,is different. As King himself said,"I took Bram Stoker's Dracula, bounced it off the wall &kept bouncing&'Salem's Lot is what happened."He even references it at one point, see if you can spot where!

I own all of his books (except for maybe one or two of his recent ones) and I find something to love about all of them! I really enjoyed the Dark Tower series, though; Roland is an unforgettable character.

I think It has to rank as one of his scariest. Certainly Salem's lot was up there as well. A recent book Cell was a return to his hooror roots.
