no you dont. but i have windows xp, and it runs faster than vista (in my opinion) and doesnt need as many updates. but going back to your question, you can still have basic and do all the things you mentioned above.

Get Premium.
Vista Basic Lacks these Features found in Vista Home Premium
Windows Aero desktop (Gives Visa its distinctive look)
Windows Mobility Center and Tablet PC support
Windows Meeting Space
Windows Media Center
Scheduled Backup
Windows DVD Maker
Windows Movie Maker in High Definition
Premium games
Compare features of Vista versions

You should have 2GB RAM to run Vista.
RAM is about $40/GB

If i were you, i would get Vista Ultimate because it has every feautures you need unlike basic or premium . But since you asked between them i would go by premium, with extra money, you'll get more feautures than Basic. ANd think premium as Windows xp media center~

If you intend to install vista on your existing computer (Laptop), go to this microsoft link first.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
Download and run Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor first.
Run this program even if you intend to purchase the Full version and not the Upgrade
This is very important.
Vista is designed for specific hardware and software.
You do not want to spend money on a system that will not be compatible with your Laptop.
This download is free from the link I supplied.
Good Luck.

premium is better for what you want to do go to http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=390&tabid=1&WT.mc_id=0207_08 and scroll down it will tell you the difrences
and you should check if you have enough ram and hard drive space for premium. i think you need at least 2 gig's of raam for premium

Well, sorry to say, but I tried both and did not like any of it. One machine I put back to XP, the other is running Linux now. Both run much faster and need less updates.
