Well, in my humble opinion, the expansion of the United States in the 19th century was due to industrial growth spurred by reconstruction after the Civil War. Steam power in particular was more widely used after the American Civil War. Such a new technology increased trade and thus benefit the U.S. economically. The invention of ironclad ships greatly benefited the U.S. in Spanish-American war in 1898. The Iron sided ships were able to smash the wooden ships of the Spanish Empire. The war provided more economic opportunity with Spain's former colonies. The currency at home and the debate over whether the U.S. should try a silver standard had a huge influence over the future of the dollar.

The ideology of Manifest Destiny which described the "destiny" of the United States to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific affected U.S. expansion. This also attributed to the eventual gold rush and evolving economic activity in California around 1849.

P.G. is somewhat right, my idea is the Manifest Destiny also but, the immigration had a lot to do with this. There were millions, I mean like Ireland, two million people a year coming from Ireland alone. Along with the immigration came ideas, new ways, America was stretching her legs, new inventions were coming to the table by the thousands. The railroads, cattle raising, breeding and shipping. Tobacco, cotton, the automobile, oil, we were literally running, not walking anymore and, it was the immigrants and their families that were making America.

Industrialization and marketing, advertising, all made America.

How 'bout this idea. YOU analyze the U.S. and it's motivation for expansion in the late 19th century and explain your answer and we will read it and give you our opinion and some help if you need it. See there is this concept that when someone studies, reads a reference until they understand the subject then they will be actually learning and not depending on others to actually do your homework instead of assist you with it. I love helping people, especially those that also help themselves. You will be so proud of yourself.
