If you are just walking, you can hear the droppings fall, and the odor is usually a good indication of what is going on, too.

I don't own a horse, but when I ride any horse I find it easy to tell. Their weight shifts in a specific way, especially at the slower gaits. When you're cantering or jumping it's harder to tell, but the shift in their weight is still there and if you're not focusing on anything else you can feel their gait get slightly awkward and more on the forehand for a few seconds.

Horses are all different on how they indicate that they are doing it. Some will completely stop, others may slow a little. You can also feel them, they will shift their weight, etc.

Usually because there is this loud noise, and I THINK that my pony just got a turbo power up, but in reality he stops what he's doing and dive bombs the arena with road apples.

With one of them it's obvious because he slows down and goes kind of bow-legged at the back !

The distinctive plop is a dead giveaway. I also have a couple who always stop to poo.
Can't blame them...so do I.
