Per league, the three division leaders are seeded 1-2-3 based upon their season records. Tiebreaker methods exist if necessary. The wildcard is seeded #4 regardless of record.

Pairings for the Division Series round are 1-4 and 2-3, with one exception. If the wildcard is from the same division as the #1 seed, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4. The Division Series is played in 2-2-1 format, with Game 1 homefield going to the higher ranked seed.

The League Championship Series is played in 2-3-2 format, with Game 1 homefield again going to the higher ranked seed (note the wildcard never gets original homefield advantage).

The World Series (2-3-2 format) Game 1 homefield is predetermined (currently assigned to the league that won the All-Star Game).

David H is just missing one point. If the wild card and top team are in the same division then the wild card plays the #2 team and the #1 plays the #3

No they would not face each other in first round. There are 3 divisions and 1 wild card. Wild card faces the best in the divisions unless wild card runs in that particular division.

they are seeded by there record. first round is called the division series (ds) and is best 3 out of 5. the second round is called the championship series (cs) and is the best 4 out of 7. the winner of the ds's play the other winner in the cs. the world series is the winners of the cs. they play 4 out of 7 to see who is the winner. also if a player is not on the 25 man roster by august 31 at 11:59:59 then he can not play in the playoffs. The ds and the cs are also referred to as the alds nlds alcs and alcs (American league division series national league division series American league championship series and national league championship series). hope that all helps.

The best team with the record in the AL/NL will face the wild card winner of the AL/NL. Then the remaining two teams will face off. The first round is best of 3.

The next round is remaining of the two previous series winner obviously. This is a best of 7. Home field goes to the team with the better record.

The next round is the Fall Classic, the World Series. The winners of the AL/NL face off in a 7 game set. Home field goes to the league that won the all-star game.

It works out like this,

The team with the best record in the league plays the wild card winner in a series called the ALDS* and NLDS*.

The remaining two teams play each other, who ever wins three games first goes onto the next playoff bracket.

After the ALDS* is over they go to play a ALCS* and NLCS.

The two teams that beat the team before them play each other.

Who ever wins four games first goes onto the World Series.

And who ever wins the best of four or five games I forgot of which, win the World Series.

* American League Division Series/National League Division Series

* American League Championship Series/National League Championship Series
