I know Australia is super strict on customs. Can you actually ship out wine (as a gift)? I heard of cases where it was confiscated....

I believe for a case, you need to have a licensed liquor retailer ship it for you, but check that with your local post office. They will have the regulations on hand.

If a bottle or two, see Australia Post's page on shipping wine.
Make sure to fill out the declaration correctly (it's complex!).
If you miss something, your wine won't be going anywhere.

You can ship wine overseas, Australian customs is not interested in your exports of wine. The problem is often not with getting it out of Australia but getting it into another country. There are wine shops in all capital cities that can arrange international dispatch and customs declarations for you. In Sydney there is one at Circular Quay.

It would be worth finding out from such a place how you go about sending wine overseas and then buying it somewhere else and sending it yourself. It will be cheaper.

No it is not allowed. Good alcohol is kept strictly for Australians, only stuff from Europe or New Zealand is on forwarded.
