Get some melatonin supplements. They help your body release the hormone that it naturally produces, which stimulates sleep. Take 1-2 pills 20 minutes before bedtime. You will fall asleep easier and it will help you establish a good sleep pattern.
Start trying to go to sleep and wake up at the same time..even on weekends..it will keep your body's circadian rhythm normal.

Reading or doing math problems in my head always works for me. Just think about anything other than falling asleep.

you're probably either nervous about school or excited. i would just grab a school book and start reading to prepare yourself for school. if you're nervous, then you'll most likely just fall asleep while reading it, just like you would when u need to study. haha. if u're excited about it, then u would have at least accomplished something to help you, and used your time productively.

notice the inhale and the exhale
if your thoughts drift from this task, don't get upset, just return to your task
