These are known as aquifers. They are usually made up of sedimentary rocks, such as sandstones or limestones. Aquifers transport water well when they exhibit two key properties: porosity and permeability. Porosity means the total amount of open pore space that water can fill, and permeability describes the interconnectivity of these pores. Thus, if you have a rock that has a high percentage of connected pores (high porosity and permeability), it will be a good aquifer.
