You want to leave the fish in the tank. You want to remove at least 25% of the water during the vacuum process, so you will have to move fairly quickly. Never remove more than 50% of your tanks water!

When refilling the tank set your tap to the same temperature as your tank to help reduce stressing the fish. Never pour cold water directly on your fish. Also, don't forget to add any conditioning solution should your tap water require it.

You leave the fish in the tank. That's the whole reason of using a gravel vacuum - so that you can get up the waste and debris that gather in the bottom and do a partial water change without having to take the fish out.

i leave my fishes in, the stress of moving them is about the same if not greater than changing the water when they are in the tank.

i have been changing my water like this for the past 13 years with no problems. The fishes will avoid the syphon, in fact when they get use to it, they will often swim by it and try eatting dirt that goes up the tube.

Yep, it will stress the fish to take them out. Just suction around them:)
