I took Spanish in 9th grade, then I wanted to try French so I took both Spanish and French in 10th grade. Well I absolutely fell in love with French so I wanted to switch to French for 11th grade (I can only take 1 language this year). However my parents want me to take Spanish because they say it will be more useful and it will look better on college applications if I took the same language through high school. Oh and I don't know if it affects the matter but I want to be an artist or actress.

Class registration is tomorrow and I don't know what to do! Do colleges really care that much if you switch languages? I really want to take French but I'm not sure if it's worth risking my chance of getting into a college I like. On the other hand, learning a language is a life skill and I might regret not going with the one I like. I'M SO CONFUSED!

There is no easy answer to your question. Finishing one particular language is best regardless of the one selected. The difficultly factor should not matter. Both Languages have a similar approach in how they are taught since the are romance languages. Ask your counselor is you have any electives available for senior year or if there is an accelerated program in the summer coming up you can finish Spanish to complete your school requirement and take French which is obviously your passion.
Consider this knowing three languages is certainly better than two so exposure to the third would not be detrimental at all. Your choice of careers is not affected by the language choice. If you have several plans it will be easier to provide your parents and yourself with a clear picture of what to expect. Additionally colleges will be impressed with the fact that you took on an additional language especially as an enrichment it sets you apart from other candidates.

If I were you I'd take the French, you like it better and you have more chance of reading scholarly articles in French in college than in Spanish. Although Spanish is a truly great language and really practical. But if I were you I'd take French.

I would suggest taking French. Obivously Spanish teachers are going to tell you to take Spanish but French is something that you said your self something you love.
Spanish can't be all that useful. The number one language that's the official one is English, but French came second.
Spanish is like 6 or something.

As a Spanish speaker (and teacher of English), from my personal experience I would highly recommend you to take Spanish. Why? Because it is one of the most difficult languages to learn (because of the many conjugations of verbs) and if you have a good teacher, you'll learn it. And you always have the possibility of studying French on your own. I've been told it's much easier than Spanish!

In all, I would go for Spanish and then, do some kind of extra course on French :)

Most educational admissions committees don't item to extra language reviews, furnished that you've met the minimal language standards for commencement. Studying both Chinese or French moreover to Spanish would aid you in gaining admission, in view that you might exhibit a broader appreciation of language reviews. Additionally, the ones languages can also be very priceless in industry settings.

If you want to take French, then by all means take French. I took French I and II in H.S. Even though Spanish may be more practical and useful in real life, take what you feel you want to take. In my experience the foreign language you took didn't really matter as far as college admission was concerned. Just one piece of advice that I leave you with, turn in your application to college as soon as you possibly can. That way you are not just #32540 out of 50,000. If you turn it in earlier the college admissions counselor generally has more time to look at your application, and if you turn it in earlier you are generally higher on the totem pole of getting in, you might say. So turn your application in as soon as you can. That way you are #103 out of 50,000.
