They consist of small pleats and are ivory color. I really like them and can not find any replacements that I like as much.Over the course of several years they have gotten a bit dingy and I would like to clean them if anyone knows of a way to do it without damaging them. Thanks!

They appear to be of a linen type material. No, it is not actually dust that I am trying to get rid of, they just look dirty and dingy and in need of a washing! I will try the lint roller suggestion though once I get them cleaner looking! Thanks!

Try rubbing the fabric with white corn meal. Gently. What you are trying to remove is soil from air polution. So you need to use an absorbent product. Corn meal (yellow0 works nicely on traffic patterns on carpets, too. You may have to repeat the above procedure several times. Brush the shade with a soft brush after each application.

The problem with washing them is that the steel rims can rust. I have cleaned mine -- the same kind you have -- with a cloth bag filled with a powder (advertised for cleaning lampshades and wallpaper.). Actually the powder was crumbled gum erasers -- you know those light yellowish brown erasers you might have seen in an art class. But that method left a rubbery smell that magnified from the heat when the lamps were on. So all in all, the only cleaning method I would recommend is vacuuming with a small attachment.

I like the lint roller suggestion, I was going to say that. But if they are a couple years old it might not get it all. What kind of fabric/material are they? You can try using water w/laundry soap and a rag and hand wash them. Or try bleach water, if the material is safe for bleach. That is just what I would try.

I use one of those sticky lint rollers to remove the dust from my lamp shades. Maybe you could try that as a starter?

I have actually washed my lampshades in Coolove. I just filled my laundry tub with cool water and Coolove and put the lampshade in and swished it around a little bit...don't let it soak....then rinsed it off and they looked like new.

if its just dust you are trying to get rid of, i would try the small attachment on your vaccuum cleaner,,or just the opposite and use a hairdryer to blow it away.
