In New York State you would petition family court for a modification in your support owed. Then the judge would decide what is fair for you to pay, based on your current earnings and your prospects.
You should file this petition soon, because you will continue to owe your current amount until it is filed. In New York you do not need a lawyer to do this, you can simply go in to Family Court and a clerk will help you.

If you go to court, explain to them what happened. They might ask you to present them with something that says you actually did lose your job and just did not quit to avoid paying child support. Sometimes they'll give you a certain amount of weeks or months to find a job. But other than that, you just have to sit and wait to see what happens next.
Good Luck! I know Texas and Florida are really hard on child support payers.

Well whatever amount you were paying just continues to add up. They can take your license, your taxes, and your butt to jail if you don't pay. They will take a bench warrant out on you to show up at court. If you show and don't have the money to catch up the arrears they will put you in jail until somebody pays it. You should try to get a job and pay something on the child support to (1) Take care of your responsibility and (2) Stay out of jail.

you live in a state where you can go to jail very easily. sometimes for no reason.
if you have a letter of termination you need to go to court, take the child support order with you and let them know you were fired. also notify the mother.
let the court know you will not be able to comply with the order until you find a new job. keep a record of the date of your court appearance and the names of the persons you speak with.
be certain to apply for unemployment benefits.

Advise the CS agency ASAP and demonstrate appropriate paperwork. If you apply for unemployment, CS will get deducted from your benefits, and when you receive a tax return, if there are any arrears, they WILL take it from your return. Just continue to keep in contact with the agency, and good luck finding employment, unemployment is on the rise, sigh, again...

It just racks up like bills. If you get unemployment, they'll take 1/2 if it's less than what you pay. They can only take 50% of your income. The balance will continue to add up though.

You had better report your current status to the authorities. They will probably put you on hold but if you get another job they will probably go after you for the money that you did not give your ex.

you have to let the mother know that you lost the job, let the state know and just look for another one. I think you can let the state know on the state childsupport website. but do it immediately because if you hesitate and shes a *********. then she will take you to court. If she is getting state aid then the state will be on you like white on rice!!!!

you have to get another job...once your child support gets so far behind, you can go to jail. call your support agency, and just let them know whats going on, so they dont think you have just decided to stop paying.
