Recognize the part you played in the mistake. That is the only thing you can control. If you change your actions and decisions then the outcome must be different. However this takes much disipline and high reasoning to accomplish. Read up on Plato, Epicurious, and the Stoics. They all offer great insights to leading a mistake free life.
I would say christianity and buddhism as well, however, both were impacted by Platonic thought.

Think about your mistake and try to see what you did wrong. If you feel strongly enough about it then once you learn your mistake and how it was wrong you will be able to know and avoid ever doing it again.
I don't know what your mistake was, but sometimes it helps to get it down on paper, kind of like secret confession. But probably the most important thing is to learn from your mistake.

Write it out, draw a picture of the incident or get a photo of the place. Put your comments under the pic. Paste it to your bathroom wall or hang it on your refrigerator.
Otherwise you will be like the rest of us, finding yourself in the same circumstances again. Sometimes making the same mistake twice!

Be conscious of your own actions.
Think hard before making any decisions.
Write a list of your mistakes (it could be long lol. but everyone commits mistakes). Refer to it from time to time and promise yourself: "I'm never gonna commit this mistake again."

Analyze whatever chain of events [including your decisions and/or choices] lead up to your making the mistake in question.
Then don't repeat those actions.
Simple as that.

Write down every mistake you make in a notebook and review it everytime you do anything. Evenutally you won't be able to make any mistakes because you won't be able to do anything but rehash past mistakes.

It sounds like it was a "Biggy" mistake...
Obviously it bothers you immensly that you made it to begin with...
Believe me ~ you'll remember and if/when a simiar situation to make the decision comes up again, you will not repeat it.
Believe in yourself............

You could try approaching the same issue more objectively and less subjectively.
