As you probably know, being in California, they aren't allowed to consider that you are a minority at all these days, and that you are low income has never counted for anything other than financial aid. I would say that with a 2.7 GPA, you don't stand any chance at all of getting into a UC like Berkeley, UCLA, or UC San Diego, but there is a small chance, depending upon your SAT scores, that you could get into some place like UC Merced or UC Riverside.

I could be mistaken but I think the minimum UC GPA has been raised to 3.0. Even then, most people who get accepted have mid- to upper-3.0. How are you calculating your GPA? Are you including just 10th and 11th year grades? Have you taken any AP classes?
You may want to consider CSUs. However, if you are set on going to a UC, you shouldn't give up yet. Read up on Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) programs offered at your local JC.

You must complete your a-g requirements with a 3.0 or higher (in your sophomore and junior years, freshman and senior grades are excluded in the GPA calculation) to be eligible to apply to the UC campuses. If you have less than a 3.0, you may be eligible to apply if you score, on average, 700 or better on all sections of the SAT Reasoning Test and the two Subject Tests (see additional details on satisfying this requirement here: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/exam_eligibility.html ).
Acceptance rate for students with less than 3.0 GPA is anywhere between 0.3% to 18% for all UC campuses in Fall 2007.

What major you choose has a big impact too... but even if you dont --- dont worry about it too much.. just go to a junior college for the first couple years and transfer in as a Junior. Your chances of being admitted will be much better. Many kids drop out after the first year or two.
Plus, youll prob like the junior college better -- no grad student teachers, and its usually a much nicer learning atmosphere.
