Elvis was great, but, he was never king in my book. Either way, I am going to have to go with Elvis Costello. I could always relate more to his music than with "the king's", who to me sounded like watered down, mainstream friendly blues.
While Elvis the King was too cool for school, Costello rocked the nerd core, like me! I just FEEL Costello's music more. It speaks to me... he's a musicians musician (even though I am no musician) I like his songs, "Pump it Up!" and "I can't stand up for falling down" in particular
Oh, and he released his first single on my birthday (March 25th, but not the same year!) :-)

There's no denying that Elvis Presley was the king. The first to combine blues, gospel, and country sounds, and to cross racial and class divisions. My favorite song of his is "Don't Be Cruel." I love how the is song upbeat and 'dancy' while the lyrics speak of impending heartbreak.
But, maybe because I'm a child of the 70's, Elvis Costello's music speaks to me more. Or maybe it's because, just like Buddy Holly, he shows the world that you can be smart and nerdy and still rock. (Like me! :) My favorite song of his is "Alison." It, too, seems contradictory, as it speaks of obsession, and also disrespect. And I can really relate to the line, "I know this world is killing you."

I am sorry to say that when it comes to Elvis, I am un-American. I really never got into the craze or the music. However, give Elvis a plain old guitar and sing on his own , he great. Saw him on a show once, singing a some songs all by himself and when I closed my eyes it was music to my ears, enjoyable and soothing.

"Elvis Presley", the gifted & talented man before the drugs.
A man that loved his Mama,& his Country amoung other things.
And had a good heart & gave many gifts to strangers.

elvis the king baby!..i don't have a fave but i really like poison ivy league.. and that's alright (mama), a big hunk o'love..and hard headed woman.
