Recent history is on the Yankees' side for game 1. Pettite has been superb in games following a Yankee loss. Dice-K has pitched well but Sox bats go to sleep when he pitches. Maybe this is all chance, but I think the Yankees will win this one.
Beckett has been on fire and Clemens is showing his age. I'd say Boston has a big edge here unless Beckett collapses. Clemens might get fired up to pitch a gem, but he won't last 8 innings, and Boston will get a crack at that weak bullpen. I expect Boston to take a lot of pitches early to try to wear out Clemens.
Schilling needed a break and it seems to have done him a world of good. I think he'll be in top form, and so will Wang. If the series is tied 1-1 or if Boston's down 2-0, this will be a huge game. Schilling thrives under pressure, while Wang is now the better athlete. It could definitely be a great pitchers' duel. I'll give a slight edge to the Yankees because they're at home and Jeter and/or A-Rod will come through when their backs are to the wall.
To me the most interesting subplot is how Francona uses Gagne and how he performs. He's new to this rivalry, and the playoff implications put more pressure on him. He has a great chance to prove himself, but if he does poorly then Francona has a major problem in the bullpen, which has been the team's most consistent strength through the season.
I hate the Yankees, so I'm excited that Boston has the chance to set them back, but I'm anxious because I remember 1978, and if there's going to be a repeat this is likely the series that will launch the Evil Empire on another comeback.
I'd love to see golden boy Chamberlain get shelled, and most of all I'd like to see Boston get to Rivera.
---------------------
Addition after first game: Dice-K was sub-par, Pettite was effective, and none of the four relievers yielded a run. Boston appears to have lost Ramirez for at least one game and perhaps more, which could hurt them seriously in the series and beyond. Unfortunately for the Sox, the Yankees gave up on Henn. They also put Mussina on probation and brought up a new stud from the farm, which could have a major impact down the stretch. Seattle lost a heartbreaker, their fourth loss in a row, so the Yankees are looking good in the wild card race, just one game back. The only advantage I can see the Sox gaining in Game 1 is that Torre used his top two relievers (Chamberlain and Rivera), so he might be hesitant to use them in Game 2. Boston's A-team relievers are fresh. That could be critical late in Game 2.

In order to win the series, the Yankees must sweep. If the Red Sox take even one game, they are still 7 games up with 28 to go. I hope the Yankees are crushed, but even if the Red Sox lose 2 out of 3, they will hold their ground. The Yankees' big test will be the Mariners series. It may decide the wild card. Torre will burn out his rotation on the Red Sox and have Mussina, Karstens, Hughes and Jabba the Hutt or whatever his name is for the series against the Mariners.

Lets look at this series here.
Offensive talent: Even. Both teams are stacked in this category.
Starting Pitching: Slight edge to Boston. Matsuzaka is playing very well right now and is more talented than Pettite. Beckett is a leading AL Cy Young candidate and should easily dispatch a has-been like Clemens. Wang and Schilling is the best match-up. Both are having decent, but not stellar seasons.
Bullpen: Edge goes to Boston. Rivera has been terribly inconsistent and the Yankees bullpen looks pretty depleted right now. Boston's bullpen, with Papelbon and Okajima, is clearly more talented and consistent.
Coaching: Slight edge to the Yankees. Personally, I think Torre is one of the best in the game.
Intangibles: Slight edge to the Yankees. You are at Yankee Stadium and this is do or die time for the Yankees. Boston is under more pressure to finish the Yankees off in this series, which should be a benefit to the Yankees.
My prediction: Boston wins two out of three. They have enough to beat the Yanks, but they won't sweep them.

LOL!! Come on the Red Sox!! Look at it like this:
-Offense -
Yankees :They have stronger lineup but are doing nothing with it right now. Their offense will not get past the Red Sox pitching.
Red Sox :They have a strong lineup and will dominate the Yankee pitching.
-Pitching-
Yankees - THEY ARE HORRIBLE AT PITCHING!!! They are exactly like the 2005 Red Sox. Too much offense and no pitching. Making Clemens join the rotation is somewhat a good move but come on now, Clemens is too old for this and is horrible. Look at his record right now. Thats pathetic for a Hall of Famer.
Red Sox - Their pitching will have no trouble at all making the Yankee offense feel humiliated. They have the best bullpen ERA in the league. Clearly better than the Yankess.
Now put 1 and 1 together and you will get a sweep by the Red Sox. They will leave the Bronx with a 11 game lead.

It doesn't make or break the Yankees season. They won't win the division either way.
Pettitte vs. Matsuzaka: Daisuke is coming off a GREAT start, despite getting the loss. He is clearly the more talented pitcher, and with the Red Sox heating up offensively, and the Yankee bats being dead, I put the Sox chances at 60%.
Clemens vs. Beckett: Clearly Beckett is the better pitcher right now. He is in his prime, while Clemens is wrinkling up. The ERA's, records, strikeout counts, k/bb and k/9 ratio clearly show Beckett is the clear favorite to take this one. I put the Sox chances at 80%.
Wang vs. Schilling: Wang has had a rough stretch, and only recently had his first quality start in about a month. Schilling has been consistently average. I put this game at 50/50.
Sorry if this seems biased, but if you think I'm biased, you obviously haven't kept up with the standings chart. You aren't back 8 games for nothing.
16-0 tonight? Good job, boys. Keep it up.

Love love love the Red Sox..That being said, I see the Yanks taking at least 1 game and it will probably be the 3rd. Of course that said, I really hope the Sox sweep! How nice it would be to sweep and then I could pretty much relax until October! As it is, I am tense and nervous every game. I havent relaxed since last year when I knew there was nothing we could do...lol..Yes I am psycho...

Yankees are currently 8 games out HaHa.
Gotta go with the sweep. Wangs got the best chance to win against Boston but the Sox will be producing a lot of runs in the last game. I would have liked to see Clemens and Shilling in the geezer bowl.
ERA
Petitte 3.69 Matsuzaka 3.76
Clemens 4.34 Beckett 3.21
Wang 3.95 Schilling 4.11

2 out of 3, or a sweep in front of the home crowd. (for the sox)
I don't think the red sox are taking this series for granted, even with an 8 game lead.

This is a gladiator matchup of epic proportions. In an attempt to outdo the Jason Varitex/Alex Rodriguez slap fest to appease the bloodthirsty fans, Dice-K will dive bomb a jet plane onto the mound, killing himself in the process. Incredibly, Andy Pettite's "cover the face with the glove" manuever will save his life. Beckett will trip Roger Clemens, causing him to break his hip and miss the next three seasons, after which he will return to baseball and win his 8th Cy Young award at the age of 94. And Curt Schilling will choke Wang to death with a bloody sock.
