i am trying to make my computer fan into a portable fan. so i took the fan out of my desktop. now there are 3 wires. blue red and black. which one goes to the plus and negative? i tried all the possible combination, but it does not seem to work. is it because my fan needs dc power? or i need more powerful batteries (im using double aa)

red is plus, black is - ,yellow is rpm signal, you dont need
you need minimum 7-8-9 Volt power, with six or seven AA Batteries it works but not for a long time, the size is to small.

Fan needs 12v I suspect, also the yellow lead is a return feed to report RPMs of the fan, not 100% sure it can run without something on that.

Use a fan that is designed to hook to a proper 12V DC line, the ones that come with hard drive pass through connectors, or go to a "cheapy shop" and but a small fan with folding blades that IS designed to run on batteries.

a Computer fan will not run under 10 volts period, they also will not run in reverse polarity either. You would need at least 8 AA's to accomplish this (not very practical). The extra wire is a rpm feed to the MOBO and isn't required to make the fan run.

Hi Friend! it's safe to taking it off only when you do it carefully :-) there are different ways to take off fan on different motherboards.... you can see it in ur motherboard's user guide and then remove it carefully.... in most of the cases cleaning fan first time makes it quiter and if it doesn't help you can get new one.... fans are not such costly - you will prefer new one seeing its cost... thnx & best wishes
