The Yankees will win the Wild Card. Look at what just happened, they went 2-5 on a road trip and lost a half game in the Wild Card. I don't really see how Seattle is so hot right now they've lost 3 straight games. They have a VERY tough schedule. In addition to playing the Angels, Blue Jays, Yankees, Tigers and Angels again, and all but one of those series on the road they are losing an off day to make up a 1 game "series" with Cleveland on the road. So they lose an off day and add on two travel days. They have a young rotation that will break down during these dog days of august and gettin to the stretch run.

I like Chipmaker's analysis of the Yankee's chances of winning the AL East. While the Yankees might not be out of the playoffs, I think their chances of winning the East are very slim to none. They should be playing for the Wild Card right now. Either way, they have to do well against Boston.

Of course it is. Yankee fans are acting like the world is over because they didn't win the East. Apparently they forgot about a little thing called the wild card. However, the way Seattle has been playing, it's gonna be a hell of a race.

One thing about the Yankees, even when they're down they are still the major topic of conversation. The Yankees will still make the playoffs and with a little luck watch the Red Sox choke like they always do.

We are done in the AL East, but NOT the Wild Card.
Remember, the M's are playing the Angels and I am expecting the Angels to take 2 out of three or sweep them.
The olny ''real'' way of winning the East is if we sweep Boston twice witch is unlikley but possible.

The only way the yankees are going to make the play-offs this year is if win the Division. In order for them to do that they will have to take ALL 6 games left with Boston. I dont see that happening.
Although it could, I dont think it will.
And even though you are a yankee fan, I respect and admire you for sticking by your team through thick and thin. That is what REAL fans do!

I agree with you!
The Yanks are playing for the wild card!
Bottom line is, they have to win THEIR games. Let's not worry about the scoreboard, let's focus on 2 out of 3 wins vs the Sox this week.
There is hope, I think the yanks squick in and do damage in the playoffs!

This is why it's such a great rivalry--so much history has been made. Boston made history in '04, but usually it's the Yankees making the history. That's why it's foolish to rule anything out until one team is mathematically eliminated. Probability and logic say the Red Sox have a huge advantage, but so many comebacks have defied probability and logic.

Since I cannot plagiarize my own work, I have no qualms about cutting 'n pasting this from another thread.
----------
Just playin' with numbers, but let's take a look.
Thru 27-August:
Boston 80-51
New York 72-59
31 games remaining each, including six head-to-head.
Assumptions:
1. they split the six games, 3-3;
2. Boston plays its other 25 one game below .500, 12-13.
Boston final record: 95-67.
New York final record to win AL East: 96-66 (because Boston will own the tiebreaker).
NY needs to go in its other 25 remaining games: 21-4 (.840).
I'm just not foreseeing this amazing surge happening.
The math says it is possible.
The faith-baseballed Yankee fandom knows it will come to pass.
The reality-baseballed world says it won't. Not this year.
