A usb headset has a built in soundcard, so it will give sound, but will not sound as good as a "decent" soundcard

If you are listening to sound through your usb port, there is no interface with the sound card and you are usually just installing drivers so that your computer is generating sound through software and sending the output through your USB port.

You should probably just get the sound card and buy a nice headset that has the jacks that will fit in the output ports on that card.

Actually USB headsets use their own built-in sound cards iirc. This means that it will make no difference which sound card you have.
