Are you talking about the Depo shot? Last I knew of, when breast feeding, there was only 1 type of pill you could take, due to the hormones that are in contraceptives, they would be passed onto the baby, and be harmful. So the only thing available was an estrogen-only pill... As far as the Depo shot, I spent a few years on it. Some women gain weight, some don't. I didn't the first year, then came off of it, started using it again, and gained weight. If I had any period at all, it was just some super light spotting, about a week before my next shot. But I loved having no period, and those were the only side effects I had from it. The Paraguard IUD might be an option, it's hormone free, it's a copper IUD. You'll have to talk to you dr. I had the Mirena (hormonal) IUD between my kiddos, and loved it!

A progesterone birth control pill is given for nursing moms, but it's not as effective and many women complain of side effects, such as irregular bleeding. For some it works well though, talk to your doctor.

I chose to not use the pill and I didn;' have a period for 12 months, when I weaned my daughter. I decided that I'd rather use alternative methods rather than a pill which brings on your period. I hate having a period though, so it really depends on your preference.

The DEPO shot is a hormonal (contraceptive) injection that can be given to breastfeeding women, however you MUST read up about the side-effects because it just doesn't work for all and can mess up your cycles etc.

Mini pill can cause high blood pressure and nausea. It can also reduce milk supply. My doc said to use condoms, pull out method but no pill. You are less likely to get pregnant while breastfeeding anyway.
