i really have not thought of it.it does lighting my hair,but the sun makes my skin more red&makes me have more freckles,since i was a little girl i was full of freckles,so its no big deal now,when i was little so many kids teased me,they would call me freckles face,i cryed many tears,even grow ups do not relize,how hurtful those words are,

Because the sun is burning out the oil in your hair, but when you sunbath the chemicals in your skin react to form a darker pigment.

I guess because two different substances are reacting to the sunlight - skin and hair are not the same thing. Good question!

I burn easily and don't really get color, but year I guess because the hair is dead nerve cells thats why it might lighten...lol...idk

My hair is red, and the sun streaks it blonde, so yes, for me anyhow.

...it's never lightened my hair....
but i think because our skin is more sensitive than non-living hair. pigmentation is based on getting darker, while hair color is based on getting lighter (i.e. graying as we age).
