a lot is correct.

Other common mistakes like that include
- mixing up there and their
- mixing up accept and except
- Incorrect adverb use (eg. bad vs badly)
- Misuse of who/whom
- Misuse of I/Me
- Misuse of your/you're, its/it's
- Misuse of lose/loose
- Misuse of i.e/e.g
- Misuse of affect/effect
- Misuse of then/than
etcetcetc...

A lot is correct. Allot is correct. Alot is not.

This one doesn't even come close to "lose", which many people spell "loose".

"a lot" is correct.

Another one people get wrong is "more so". Most of the time, "so" shouldn't be there.
