its two plates, one on top of the other, approx. 800mm long x 225-300mm wide with a dial on the side which gives a reading in feet per mile.

It's a tracking gauge ( still available ) but it doesn't read in feet per mile it reads the amount of toe in or toe out, that's the angle of the way that the wheels point in or out.

Take it to an older alignment shop or someone that repairs alignment equipment--they should be able to tell you---must be pretty old. Probably something like angle gauge.
