It had something to do about the portrayal of black media in the 80s and was about a production/movie company making movies including a black karate kid (eddie) and 3 slaves trying to escape. I think it was produced by someone notable like Spike Lee. The ending is Eddie character leaving the company b/c he found it to be too degrading.

Correct, Hollywood Shuffle. Hilarious movie!

There is a scene where Bobby is auditioning for a part and everybody is imitating Eddie Murphy, I think that's what you're remembering.

I haven't seen some of the movies others here are saying were so bad. I love Eddie Murphy and have seen most of his older stuff and enjoyed it. Even if the movie is a goof, he usually has some redeeming qualities.

Hollywood Shuffle (1987) - starring Robert Townsend

Bobby Taylor wants to be a respected actor. From Sam Spade to Shakespeare to superheros, he can do it all. He just has to convince Hollywood that gangstas, slaves and "Eddie Murphy-types" aren't the sum of his talents.
