you know, they are all good depending on what you want them for. Dell is good but I'm always really disappointed when they say something like Dell Inspiron $799 and then by the time you're finished adding everything you need it's up to $1600!! I think that's misleading. The viao laptop is nice. I have an HP that's multtimedia loaded. I love it - internal TV tuner which basically acts like a TiVo and all kinds of bells and whistles. So again it's all in what you want. I would probably consider size if you are livng in a dorm... desktop
go with a mini tower. Laptops are great to take notes in class and to take to the library and stuff but they get stolen asily (happened to my son!!) So I guess it depends on what exactly you want to use it for. Good luck to you at school!

Macs could be a god choice but they cost a lot more and you may have to learn how to use it for a while, depending on your circumstance. They are capable of running Windows as well if you decide the Mac OSx is not your thing.

Dell might be a good idea because of their warranties and customer support system, which is fairly reputable.

HP laptops are probably some of the cheapest - you get more performance for your dollar, but I cant comment on the quality of their after care service.

I've no experience with sony laptops, but ive heard neither good or bad things about them either.

Macs look sweet, but they are pretty unreliable... Sonys are good computers, just more pricey... and dells are pretty much the standard choice for most college students... so choose your pick.

Phone your copllege and ask to speak with their IT department. Many can get you a great "student" discount and all will know which machine best suits the training you will be given.

Stick with the PC (non-Mac) of your choice, because most programs are written for PC's, not Macs.
