Eclipses occur about every 5½ months as the nodes (the intersections) of the
Earth's and the Moon's orbits align with the 'line of sight' between the
Earth and the Sun, and as long as the Moon arrives at or near that spot at
the same time.

The reason for this length of time, rather than 6 months, is because the
Moon's orbit around the Earth twists and makes a complete 'backward twist'
once every 18 years, 10 or 11 days (depending on how many leap years there
are in the intervening time).

In most calender years, there are two lunar eclipses. In some years, one or three may occur. No lunar eclipse may occur at all in some other years.
But solar eclipses occur two to five times in a year, five being very rare.
