I know directions aren't capitalized i.e. west, south, north, east, but when they refer to a region they are i.e. the West, North pole etc.
What I want to know is, would the (w) be capitalized in, the (w)estern army?

I do believe then it would be capitalized.

It would then be a proper noun, like the North Pole.

It would be "Western Army" if that where the proper name, or title of the location, not just a location.

The Western Army, like the Northern Militia are proper names and as such should be capitalized.
