Timing is important. Have the yard sale on Friday and Saturday, the first weekend of the month. Many on fixed incomes shop yard sales and they have just gotten their check. Be prepared to start very early in the morning when you get the most shoppers, before 7 AM. Have your prices marked on each item and for clothing, have a $1.00 table, $2.00 table, etc. Make sure everything works and is clean. Advertise in the newspaper, get other neighbors involved. The larger the sale, the more successful. Post signs nearby. Make sure you have enough money to make change. If the weather is hot, sell bottled water from a cooler for a profit.

Oh my gosh I remember my mom making me help her with our summer garage sales when I was little. The first answer is really good. I too want to emphasize how important the signs you put up are.....florescent is good......Bold lettering... arrows.... people cant stand having to slow down to 2mph just to read the sign. We nailed sturdy posterboard to pieces of thin wood so that they were sturdy and didn't bend in the wind.

Entice people in with the great finds (like a baby crib, animal cage, couch.....you know what I mean just put them in the front of the yard).

Pricing is hard because what you think is fair is usually a little high. Keep pricing decently low in the first place and then you dont have to worry about bargaining down or feeling guilty about your prices.

Also this is kind of silly but my mom let my sister and I put up a lemonade/ice tea stand. We made money AND people stuck around more because they were walking and sipping. So find some cute kids if you dont have any of your own lol.

Good luck!

put things on tables
Never put stuff on the ground
arrange like items together
if you have a lot of small items
put them in boxes with sign
25 cents or 5 for $1 or 50 cents or 3 for $1
be sure everything is priced
ice down some canned drinks to sell
packaged peanut butter crackers too
provide a box of things to keep kids busy
(coloring books, story books, sidewalk chalk)
make catchy signs, like
'No reasonable offer refused
ridiculous offers carefully considered'
signs that say 'no public restroom available'
signs stating 'we are not responsible for injuries on this
property
Our most successful yard sales have been
where my husband had guy things away from
the household things with a big sign....
'STUFF FOR GUYS'

If you are having sale in a garage....be sure
to cover up or remove any items not for sale
advertise; list some items
do not give phone number
make sure your signs are Large
and readable from a distance

ADVERTISE!!!!!! from your local newspaper, to posting up signs, to putting up papers in your stores. also post on craigs list in ya area!
Group things in like items, clean them, mark them with prices.
Put things at table hight.
Hang clothing, pair shoes, display art, if you have rugs, lay them over a fence or out on the ground.
Have at least 20-30 in change ready. Have shopping bags ready, a calculator. Get ready the night before, no matter how many times you say no early birds, there will always be some. and get ready to haggle on prices!
