Also what does a processor do? Does it process the memory at a certain speed?

1.6 GHz. Yes, that is a low number but Dual Core means that you have two 1.6 GHz processors. This is faster than many 3+ GHz single core processors even with Hyperthreading enabled. Your best upgrade if you are considering one is to upgrade memory to 2GB. I have the same processor in my Dell Lat D620 with 2GB of memory and I am very satisfied running Windows Vista Business edition.
Intel has more detailed information at: http://support.intel.com/support/processors/
I hope this helps.

The dude above is correct, but if you want an estimate (however wide), Intel duo core processors can have anywhere from 1.06 Ghz to 2.33 Ghz, but I'm guessing it's more inbetween 1.66 Ghz and 2.16 Ghz.

There is no way for me to even guess that unless you tell me the make and model of the laptop. Processors have many different speeds.
