I'm sorry MGR not coach. Scrap Iron wasn't that bad of a coach the GM destroy that team. IT was Gerry Hunsinker who made that team. Tim Poopura just got all the credit when the went to the world series.

I have not been keeping track of the Astros season but generally Garner is seen as a good manager. Sometimes they fire these guys not because they did a bad job but just because to get a new atmosphere and head a new direction. He will be working again.

I think they were a day late and a dollar short. The Astros are too far back to make the playoffs so firing the mgr and gm now is pointless. With the season they've had you could see the axe was gonna fall but with only 30 something games left they should've waited untill after the season was over and make a fresh start.

i became into happy they fired Smith and that i'm a life long Isles fan..Smith has links to the Rangers, and would harm the crew in basic terms like mononey did interior the 90s..and as some distance by way of fact the circus in ny..if i glance i think of that the Islanders nonetheless have extra cups then the two teh dDevils or the Rangers..and one good year with the aid of the Rangers doesnt erase that they have comprehensive in the back of the Isles the three years earlier that. I would desire to declare the entire league has been extremely lame so some distance as signings..the Islanders nonetheless have some skills in Bridgeport..they have been very good the previous few seasons...they might desire to nonetheless look to sgn one extra defenseman..and examine out to commerce yashin. the Islanders will fairly make the playoffs this year yet they'll make it b/c i think that Dipietro is able to coach some beter chioces

Go to the World Series and you're a great manager. Have a losing record and you're a lousy manager.

Isn't it funny that no owner has ever decided that he is the problem and sold the team but made sure the manager and GM were retained?

Purpura didn't give Garner a lot to work with, but ol' Scrap Iron made the least of it anyway.

No tears here. Buh-bye, guys.

I hope this means they'll actually try to field a competitive team. I mean come on, the Central Division has been weak for years, and now it's finally starting to get competitive. They need to step it up a notch....or three

First of all they fired the MANAGER---not a coach.
and phil garner deserved it, he's a moron. Even The Tigers didnt want him.

EDIT:
my apologies. I liked Phil when he was a player for The Brewers---butt absolutely did NOT like him when he managed The Tigers! I was glad to see him leave Detroit!

It is not their fault, but sometimes you have to move on. They need to replenish the minor league system and retool their major league roster. They need another top-of-the-rotation starter and another power bat. Since Biggio is retiring, they may need a leadoff hitter too.

Someone had to take the blame and ultimately the fall. Another case of you can't fire the players.

Phil Garner was horrible in Milwaukee.. We don't even want him back. He deserved to be fired.
